Five Surefire Writing Strategies

by Marcie Areias

Last week, I helped put on the Bay Area Legal Recruiting Mini-Conference where Kiko Korn, founder of Legal Writing Works, presented on "Five Surefire Strategies for Everything You Write." Kiko's content helped me identify my writing strengths and weaknesses. Writing is a skill set that can always be improved, and here are Kiko's top five tips to get started.

  1. Change Your Writing Habits with a Personal Editing Sheet - It takes time to change a writing habit, so have a tip sheet visible at your work space.
  2. Lead with the Punch Line - Get to the point right away; don't bury it at the end of your writing.
  3. Write Like You Have to Pay for Every Word - Cut out unnecessary clutter.
  4. Use the White Space - Keep your reader’s attention by breaking up long paragraphs and using bullets and bold headings when appropriate.
  5. Read Out Loud to Polish Your Prose - Saying your text out loud helps catch typos and tighten your writing.
