Careers in Labor and Employment Law

by Bailey Bifoss
LCS Graduate Fellow

On September 6, LCS hosted a “Careers in Labor and Employment Law” event, at which several panelists appeared to speak about their employment or labor-based practice areas. The panelists included: Galen Sorrells, in-house counsel for The Clorox Company; Michael Pedhirney of Littler Mendelson P.C.; Monique Olivier of Duckworth, Peters, Lebowitz, Olivier LLP; and Devon King of the Employee Benefits Security Administration division of the U.S. Department of Labor.

Most compelling about the panelists’ discussion was their varied approaches to labor and employment law. By virtue of his position within The Clorox Company, Galen Sorrells has taken on a primarily managerial role, ensuring his company’s compliance with applicable labor laws. By contrast, Devon King – a recent graduate of Golden Gate University – works with benefit plan administrators and employees to answer questions and make sure that benefit plans are being upheld.

Michael Pedhirney and Monique Olivier both have more traditional litigation positions within the labor and employment law field. Nevertheless, each of their positions is unique. Littler Mendelson is a large firm with upward of several hundred attorneys, and specializes in management-side representation. Monique Olivier, by distinction, works at a small, four-person firm of which she is part owner. Duckworth, Peters, Lebowitz, Olivier provides individual and class action services, and remains steadfastly on the employee-side.
