We all know this is a difficult time for our nation’s economy. There is no denying that job searching is more challenging now and students will have to be strategic and diligent when rising to meet this challenge. It’s a good thing law students don’t back down easily.
While most of the media outlets are focusing their attention on the downturn and its repercussions, we here at Law Career Services would like to highlight one of the bright spots in the employment market: federal public service work. This sector of the legal field is most likely to benefit from President Obama’s new stimulus package and budget projections.
Pundits speculate that the forecasted budget could add hundreds of thousands of new federal jobs to the workforce. With major changes to education, health care and energy policies, look for increased attorney positions in those areas. Many federal agencies are currently investigating methods of expanding their staff under the stimulus plan.
The federal government’s job search website, www.usajobs.gov, lists hundreds of new attorney positions in Washington, D.C., and all across the US. Many of these jobs pay close to a six figure salary and provide a stable structure for advancement.
To help you kick off a job search that may take you to D.C. or other parts of the country, LCS is hosting an Out of Town Job Search workshop on Thursday, March 12, from noon to 1 pm in room 3216 in the main campus building. Susanne Aronowitz will discuss the available resources and strategies for effectively conducting a search for positions outside of the Bay Area.
Interested students who cannot attend the workshop should call LCS to set up an appointment with a counselor to cover these issues.
