1Ls Brave The Cold To Serve Community

By Leeor Neta
Assistant Director of Public Interest Programs

Last week, forty 1Ls kicked off the year by participating in the Law School’s annual Orientation Service Project. The Orientation Service Project is a special one-day program that puts students to work serving their community. For the fourth year in a row, the Service Project took 1Ls to Presidio National Park where they helped to maintain and restore the delicate Presidio landscape. This was the first opportunity for many of the aspiring public interest lawyers to volunteer with a Bay Area nonprofit organization.

The day started early as students gathered in front of the school at 8:15 am to board a bus to the Presidio. Once they arrived, representatives from the Presidio Trust provided the students some background on the Presidio and explained the importance of volunteerism in preserving the park. The students then spent a few hours removing weeds and invasive vegetation, trimming vegetation, and clearing brush and debris from an historic garden. Working side-by-side, the students got to know each other and began thinking about their own careers in public interest.

Don’t be concerned if you missed the Orientation Service Project! Law Career Services has an exciting calendar of public interest programs and networking opportunities planned. For more information about these events, please contact Leeor Neta at lneta@ggu.edu.
