How To Work A Room

by Marcie Areias

With the Exploring Criminal Law Panel and reception happening this Thursday, here are a few networking tips to keep in mind.
  1. Have an introductory speech. You will meet many people at the reception, so have a ten to fifteen second introductory speech that adequately and confidently conveys who you are. Remember that practice makes perfect, so analyze your speech and body language in the mirror.
  2. Dress the part. Always dress like a professional. If you question an outfit for one second, don’t wear it.
  3. Ask for information, not a job. Building relationships is key to a successful career. Focus on getting to know people at the reception and not on getting a job. This will pay off in the long run.
  4. Be enthusiastic. Show that you are excited to be at the reception and smile. If you are nervous, get acclimated to the environment by taking a quick walk around the room.
  5. Follow-Up. Make sure you get business cards from the people you meet. This will allow you to adequately follow-up with them after the reception.
