Assistant Director for Public Interest Programs
On September 2nd, more than 60 students packed into the SBA Lounge to hear about the importance of performing public interest work and to learn how they could enter this exciting field.
As one of the best public interest programs in the Bay Area, GGU maintains too many public interest opportunities for students to learn about at one event. However, students did learn about and discuss a few of GGU’s public interest programs, including (1) specialization certificates in Public Interest Law and Environmental Law; (2) the very large annual nonprofit job fair known as PI/PS Day; (3) the Law School Pro Bono Project, which offers countless opportunities for students to volunteer and acquire legal skills; (4) the Pro Bono Honor Society, which recognizes students for performing public interest work; and (5) the Public Interest and Environmental Law Scholars Programs, which provides annual stipends and regular programming for students with a demonstrated commitment to their fields.
Students also learned about how public interest work is financially supported through programs such as Public Interest Work Study, the Public Interest Law Foundation and the Loan Repayment Assistance Program. Dean Ramey and Professors Neitz and Calhoun each took turns talking about their involvement and tremendous support of public interest work. Moreover, several students, including Anthony Austin, Melosa Granda, Kalla Hirschbein, Autumn Laughton, and Jonah Zern, each talked about what drew them to public interest and how they have made immeasurable contributions to that field during their education.
