"If you don't go, you'll never know." This saying helps motivate me to put myself out there. It rang true on a recent weekend when I participated in the GGU Law Women's Alumnae Reunion.
The reunion brought together an array of attorneys of different ages, backgrounds and experience. As I looked across the room, I could see a GGU 2010 graduate talking to a fellow alumna who is now a judge. The recent grad is demure and absolutely hates "networking." But just by being at the reunion she made a connection with the judge and was offered a job on the spot!
Back in the office last week, a very shy 2L - who has been struggling to find a summer position - informed me that he recently joined BASF's subsection on real estate and went to one of their get-togethers. An attorney at the event was so impressed that a law student had joined the subsection that he asked the student to come in for an interview and subsequently extended an offer to him for a summer internship.
Continuing Education of the Bar ("CEB"), will be offering programs and events to law students and recent graduates at minimal cost, and The California Young Lawyers Association ("CYLA"), which is part of the State Bar, will be doing the same for newly admitted attorneys. (Membership to CYLA is free for attorneys licensed 5 years or less, or 36 years of age or younger.) LCS lists weekly events on the sidebar of this Blog. Be sure to go, so you'll know who is there to open some doors for you!
