Legal Resource - Solo Practice University

By Alex Hoyt-Heydon
Graduate Fellow, Law Career Development

Striking out on one’s own can be an interesting experience. For many of us, we have been brought up and raised on stories of the lone wolf, the solitary hero, or even just “The One.” Movies, books, and television shows of a single person against the rest of the world are so common that they have become an inseparable part of modern living. Most of us can probably remember back to that first breath of fresh air as we stepped into our first apartment away from our parent’s house, finally on your own.

Yet even as amazing as that first breath of freedom feels, it always seems to be followed by a less then pleasurable second thought. Now what? Being on your own carries with it a lot of work and responsibility, and even the best prepared will always miss a detail or two that could lead them into trouble down the road. And in the legal world, the devil is always in those details. Luckily, for those lawyers looking to start their own solo careers, Solo Practice University has a blog full of information to help you set up and maintain that decision.

Be it how to get more clients, ways to conduct yourself during representation, or even how to transition from a massive law firm into your own legal profession, Solo Practice University’s blog offers a treasure trove of articles that are easy to read and understand. Written by experienced solo practitioners, each article is designed to address a specific question, issue, or problem that a lawyer might run into when practicing on their own. The blog goes beyond just legal topics and addresses things like getting the most out of your Microsoft Word, how to increase traffic to your website, and even articles on keeping sane and healthy in the legal profession. And all of the articles are free to view without enrolling in the Solo Practice University.

Solo Practice University’s blog can be an invaluable resource, not only for those looking to set up their own shop, but also for anyone in the lawyering world. Most of the articles can be easily applied to any legal career, even if you’re in the process of looking for a new job. While the site advocates for a solo practice lifestyle, it doesn’t mean that the advice stops working outside of that limited application. In just an hour’s browsing, a lawyer can easily find 4 or five articles pertinent to where ever they are in their current legal career. Of course who knows, you might find that one post that finally convinces you to stand tall and hang your own single with pride.

Going solo does not mean you have to do everything completely on your own. The wisdom and advice from Solo Practice University’s blog can be a powerful asset in your tool box, just like the Law Career Development blog already is. And for anyone thinking of taking the plunge and setting up their own firm, remember that GGU Law has recently partnered with local law schools and the Alameda County Bar Association to launch Bay Area Legal Incubator, a solo practice incubator, in 2016 for recent graduates. If you have any questions you are free to come talk with us at the Law Career Development office to help you get stated. We offer law career coaching to all Golden Gate University alumni, and have our own insight into the exciting world of solo practice. So do yourself a favor; take some time, read a bit on solopracticeuniversity.com/blog and then make an appointment to come speak with LCD. We look forward to hearing from you.
