Job Hunting During the Holiday Season

by Susanne Aronowitz
Associate Dean for Law Career Services

But I thought employers don't hire at the holidays
According to legal search consultants Seltzer, Fontaine and Beckwith, “Although it seems counter-intuitive to job hunt during the holiday season, it’s a great time to step up your efforts while your competition is taking a break.  Legal employers begin interviewing candidates in the fourth quarter to fill openings anticipated in the new year. You can take advantage of this time to position yourself ahead of the January rush when many attorneys start a new job search after year-end bonus and salary decisions.”

With fewer candidates on the market in December, you have greater opportunity to stand out. Check out SFB’s advice on how to use the holiday season to advance your career prospects.

Prepare to Mingle
To help you brush up on your professional networking skills, we encourage you to attend an event GGU is co-sponsoring with the Bar Association's Mind the Gap program on Monday, December 9 from 6:00 to 8:00.  For the first hour, consultant Jill Wesley will be sharing a variety of networking tips and strategies designed specifically for recent law school graduates; in the second hour attorneys from the Bar Association of San Francisco will be joining us for a networking reception.  For more details and to register, click here.

Celebrate the Holidays with [New] Colleagues
Once you are trained on networking strategies, we encourage you to join other legal professionals at some of the holiday gatherings happening around the bay area.  For a list of events, click here.
